Visitors are Welcome

God has given us the gift of hospitality. So if He directs you come visit, you are most welcome. We are a place for training God's future workers so your presence with us should add to our children's training. We ask that you respect our worship. God is number one. You're welcome to join us at 6:00am and 6:00pm. We ask that your attire and your lifestyle present a good role model for our children.

However, this is not a tourist destination. This is a working pioneer outpost on the border of a hostile country. Accomodations are rated as -2. If the Lord calls you to come, it must be with a specific purpose in mind, either a specific project or with the plan to help in the practical things of everyday life, like washing dishes, carrying water, gardening, landscaping, construction, teaching, medical work, etc. Plan to live like we live - a basic vegetarian diet with rice for every meal. If you would like bread, feel free to bring your own.

Please come with a happy heart, willing to accept the best that jungle children can offer. Criticism or complaining is the hardest thing for our children to handle. But they love compliments. Most of them have never been as far as Kanchananburi (the nearest city, just an hour's drive away). They have no idea what it's like to go to a restaurant. So, if you come, please bring a happy optimistic smile on your face and warmth and adaptability in your heart.

Please NOTIFY CATHERINE before you come of your travel plans along with the size of your group by gender and age. You can contact her by email (momocat@bambooschool.org) or mobile phone at 052-9066-52 (country code: 66).

Things to Know Before You Come

No drop-ins! And be accurate with the size of your group. If you don't get a confirmation from Catherine, then make other plans.

Please notify Catherine before you come of your travel plans along with the size of your group by gender and age. You can contact her by email (momocat@bambooschool.org) or mobile phone at 052-9066-52 (66 is the country code).

Because we're on the border, you must carry your passport or copy of one.

If you have a Thailand work permit, you can get a discount on your travel

We eat our meals three times a day, vegetarian. We Have No Physical Bread, only the Bread of Life. If you have special needs, we need to know at least a week in advance as market days are only on Thursdays.

Accomodations consist of primitive bamboo huts with grass roofs, with bathing in the river. Bring a sarong or bathing suit.

Malaria season is from March to November. We believe in prevention and supply mosquito nets but you are strongly advised to bring insect reppellent. The common diseases born by mosquitos are Dengue feaver, elephantitis, malaria of all kinds. We also have scrubtyphus which can make your life rather bothersome, or kill you.

"Bamboo Baht"

We don't want our children to become "handout kids". Therefore we have introduced a payment system (Bamboo Baht). If you would like some washing done or would like to reward a child for giving extra help, you can obtain your "Bamboo Baht from Momo Cat or the staff. This Baht can be used by the child at the school shop to purchase essential items such as soap, washing powder, toothpaste, toothbrush, stationary and other essential items. Guests can choose to donate things to the shop (plaese no non-essentials). The local wage level is 10 Baht per hour, so our "Bamboo Wage" is set at the same level.

How to Get Here

The Bamboo School is locate about 4 hours West of Bangkok in the resort area of Kanchanaburi. Here's a map.

Plan A: Hire (rent) a car or minivan from the Ekamai International School for 3,000 Baht (about US$75.00) with a driver, door-to-door.

Plan B: Train. This is the famous "Death Railway" train built by POW's in WWII. It's a bit slower than the other methods, but quite a bit more scenic and historical. You can take a taxi to the Thonburi (Bang Noi) railway station by 7:15am to purchase your ticket. The train will depart to Wang Pho (Sai Yok) at 7:45am and arrive at Wang Pho sometime around 12:30. Once you're at Wang Pho station, you can take the red Bong-ti (pronounced bonn-tee) truck to Bong-ti Lung or ask a motorcycle taxi or by previous arrangement Cat will pick you up.

Plan C: Go to Bus Station "Sigh-Tigh-Migh" (Southern Bus Terminal) and catch bus number 81, which goes every 15 minutes. You'll not need to go inside the terminal to purchase a ticket. In fact it's cheaper to just purchase the ticket on the bus. This bus goes to the Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal. There you transfer to the bus at Bay #7 (near the men's toilet). This bus will leave at 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30 and go to Bang-ti Lung. If you're to late for these buses, you can go into bay 5 and catch the bus going to Tah-pah-poom. Climb off this bus at Am-pur-Sa-Yok and negotiate with a motorcycle taxi to go to Bong-ti (normally about 100 baht).

Plan D: Contact Catherine in advance, offer to pay the fuel, and if it fits into her schedule and if you're staying for more than 5 days, she can pick you up at the airport.

Long-term Volunteers

If God calls you to come and help Catherine for longer than 3 months, please contact her and be prepared to send her your resume and other information. You will need to get the proper non-immigrant visa through your local Thailand consulate in your country of origin. If you have a degree, we can get you a non-immigrant "B" visa for one year (with multiple-entry). If you have no degree, we can help you get a non-immigrant "O" visa for 1 year as a volunteer (some countries only issue it for 3 months, but it is easy to get an extension in Bangkok). To apply for either of these visas you need special letters of invitation from the Bamboo School.
