Holiday time

MomoCat October 15th, 2008

It is now school holidays… the days balmy and nights cool.. Some children have gone “home” to family or friends within Thailand, so we only have 25 kids on campus.  Dokmai and I have been visiting the hospital with an unknown sickness.  They say ( after 7 days) viral infection….. we admitted her last week as she had very high fevers, frequent bowel motions and she didn’t want to eat.  Now the fever has gone, but she is left with a red rash over her body and face… It looks like a case of old fashioned measles, but “we don’t have that here”!!

It thw meantime the site for the hospital is dug out, the finishing touches are being added to the lake house, and everone is packing… we will go camping at the lake as soon as I get home.

Leslie is running the Pittakarn service for the local people, Amy is a co driver; Somsee is on holiday, visiting her mother; I am laying around at the hospital.  Can any medic tell me why the nurses wake a parent up at 2am to tell them that the baby doesn’t have a fever!!

Pigs in the mud in the dark

MomoCat October 6th, 2008

This week has been different. First God delivered two good people to us.  Leslie has come as a volunteer for 6 months, adding a spark to us all.  The kids are responding well toward her.  She will handle the clinic, and assist with Pittakarn work.

Then on Sabbath afternoon, a Thai superstar, Boy Gor-see-ya-pong came to shara his family and friends with us.  He is a very generous christian man.  We were in awe of him and the kids sang very quietly!!!

We had two concurrent callouts that evening.  The first was uneventful, but the second was unusual.  The patient’s house was through the mud, in the dark.  The visitors were using my torch (flashlight) at the lake, so we only had the dim glow of my mobile phone to guide us through wet under foot conditions.  Okay we arrived a little damp.  The patient was extremely sick, grunting with every breath.  Quickly Somsee and Zac took him on the short cut track to the road.  Arpisit and I took the long wet track back to the car in the dark.   Only 20 yards from the house it was extremely muddy, so I decided to head for higher ground near the shadows of the trees….. down I went into the wallowing hiole of the pigs!  I landed on my butt, waist deep in the mud.  Harder I tried to get out, the more I slipped.  Finally, with Arpisit yelling words of encouragement, but not touching me, I rolled onto my knees and crawled through the murk… scrambling out as the neighbors turned on their spotlight.  I was crying with laughter… no pain in soft landings.

We rinsed off in a puddle of water, and made our way to the car.  I had a small dry patch of sarong on my tummy, so I turned it around to sit on.  I telephoned for a change of clothing to be brought to the roadside, loaded the patient and travelled.  Arpisit sat in the back with the patient as my smell made him feel sick!

I redressed in the middle of the road, and arrived at the hospital, outside clean, but inside unspeakable!  Then Dr Supat called me to the Emergency Room.  “This man smells a bit,” said the doctor….  Not the patient, but the medic!

The next morning young Porchercher preached about pigs being unclean.  Arpisit and I could only shake with laughter and agree.
